OUR
PROGRAM
Teens should be in charge of their own learning. Like anyone else, teens deserve to build projects and solve problems that they actually care about. Unsurprisingly, this approach also leads to better learning outcomes. When at TUMO, students pick their focus areas from the eight offered skills and can always try new content or switch focus areas. Every student goes through an orientation phase when they join TUMO which allows them to sample all of our skill areas and pick their favorites. On average students remain at TUMO for two years but you can stay as long as you wish.

Game Development
The goal of the TUMO Game Development workshop is to teach students how to create playable, complex 3D games that are focused on player experience. Through a combination of level design and coding, the workshop encourages students to think critically about how players navigate and interact with their games. This fosters a deep understanding of game development, where students not only learn level creation and coding but also how to design compelling game experiences that keep players engaged and invested in the gameplay.
In Level 1, students focus on the fundamentals of level design and player navigation, learning how to guide players through game worlds using design principles.
In Level 2, they shift toward the logic and mechanics behind gameplay, using a basic level of programming that is sufficient to create interactive systems, obstacles, collectibles, and NPCs.
animation
The TUMO Animation workshop is designed to teach students about movement and how animation can bring still images to life and serve as an effective tool for storytelling and addressing important topics. The workshop will focus on 2D frame-by-frame animation and its fundamental role in the filmmaking process.
In Level 1, students will learn the basics of animation by creating scenes involving a bouncing ball.
In Level 2, they’ll dive deeper into the world of animation by creating their own characters and showing their personalities through animation.
Drawing
At the core of TUMO's Drawing workshop lies the essence of character and environment creation.
In Level 1, students explore the art of bringing characters to life across various mediums and genres. Level 1 covers basic color theory and the significance of color palette in character development.
Level 2 builds on these skills by introducing students to environment building for the characters created in Level 1. This is where they’ll learn even more about color theory, texture application, lighting, and composition, which are all vital when it comes to creating immersive and captivating settings. Through hands-on experience with Adobe Photoshop, students will gain the tools they need to translate their creative ideas into compelling visual narratives.
filmmaking
At the heart of TUMO's Filmmaking workshop is the art of telling visual stories and crafting compelling narratives. We guide students to understand that in film, it's not just about telling the audience the story but showing it.
In Level 1, we dive into the magic of silent movies, where students practice telling stories without words and learn how to show and not tell.
Moving to Level 2, they explore parallel editing and gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of storytelling.
robotics
The TUMO Robotics Workshop introduces students to robotics and smart systems through hands-on learning.
Level 1 covers microcontrollers, sensors, and coding, enabling students to build and program autonomous robots.
Level 2 advances into IoT, cloud integration, and smart automation, culminating in project-based solutions. This workshop equips students with essential robotics and automation skills, preparing them for AI-driven innovations.
3D modeling
The TUMO 3D Modeling Workshop immerses students in the multifaceted world of 3D design, emphasizing both hard surface and organic modeling. This workshop focuses on developing a deep understanding of 3D space, encouraging students to manipulate and create complex models that serve various functions and aesthetics. By exploring these two core aspects of 3D modeling, the workshop aims to develop students’ technical skills and allow them to pursue their creative vision, preparing them for diverse challenges in industries like gaming, animation, and virtual reality.
In Level 1, students focus on hard-surface, low-poly modeling, creating stylized houses and environments.
In Level 2, they transition to organic modeling, using digital sculpting techniques to develop 3D characters.
programming
The goal of TUMO's programming course is to guide students through the intricate journey of mastering coding skills and help them bring their creative visions to life through the application of programming concepts. These workshops emphasize the development of problem-solving ability and how to develop efficient algorithms.
Level 1 of the course sends students on a hands-on exploration of basic programming concepts.
Level 2 allows students to dive deep into advanced programming techniques including OOP, matrices, and libraries.
music
The TUMO Music Workshop introduces students to the idea that music is an organized sound that can convey feelings and emotions rather than just noise. Music can be predictable, but students will learn how to break patterns in order to keep their tracks interesting.
In Level 1 of this workshop series, students will explore the concepts of beats, bars, rhythm, and the structure of music.
In Level 2, they’ll learn about regularity and symmetry in music, as well as how to use scales and chords to convey specific emotions. They’ll also explore a variety of genres and learn how they each create regularity in different ways.
types of learning
Personalized learning means that students get the right content at the right time, challenging enough to stretch their skills while still being accessible. It also means that students only move on to new content when they’ve demonstrated true mastery of a concept. TUMO’s three types of learning are designed to protect independent work and individual growth while still developing the essential skills of collaboration and teamwork.
At TUMO students engage in three types of learning, each designed to build on the other. Students work independently in the self-learning phase to complete activities with the support of an in-person learning coach who is a long-term mentor. After successfully passing enough self-learning activities, students unlock workshops which are month-long courses lead by our staff of industry professionals.
Self-learning phase
two hours
Self-learning activities are short, interactive exercises designed to inspire learners and develop a specific skill through a small project. Each student has a long-term mentor, called a learning coach who tracks their progress and assists them during self-learning. Each activity is submitted for review by a TUMO workshop leader who is an expert in the given field. After successfully completing enough prerequisite activities students “unlock” workshops.
Workshops
Month long
Workshops are month-long intensive courses where teens combine their skills to create a larger project. Workshop leaders are industry professionals with years of experience that they share with our students. Each skill area has three workshops progressing from beginner to advanced and preparatory activities between each level means that students come prepared for new challenges. Students can save their workshop results in their personal, online portfolio
Learning Labs
two weeks
Learning labs are like workshops except that they are led by leading experts from industry who volunteer to lead two week intensive “master classes.” Often reserved for the more advanced students, learning labs typically incorporate students from multiple skill areas to complete a group project. Alumni often cite interactions with learning lab leaders as pivotal in choosing their own careers.
the TUMO path
To provide personalized learning at a large scale, TUMO created a learning management platform called “TUMO Path” that charts a unique learning experience for each student and helps them prioritize activities when navigating through TUMO’s library of content. The Path takes into account factors like each student’s interests, rate of progress and available workshops and learning labs to create an optimized two year plan for each teen. This plan dynamically evolves as each student’s interests change or additional resources become available. The path is also a way for students to visualize their progress as they “level up” through new workshops.
